Ever since we first set our eyes on Studio4°C and Kenichiro Akimoto’s animated spin on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s iconic time-loop novel, we’ve been dying to see more. From its sumptuous colors to its really out-there sci-fi aesthetic (especially in stark contrast to the more grounded approach taken in Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt’s cult classic Edge of Tomorrow), and down to its unique new perspective, the new All You Need Is Kill has quickly become one of our most highly anticipated movies. And now we know when it’s coming—and it’s continuing to look remarkable.
Warner Bros. Japan has dropped a new trailer confirming that the anime adaptation will hit Japanese theaters early next year, and while we still don’t quite know when to expect it in the West (it did just make its US premiere this past weekend at New York Comic Con), at least we can treat ourselves to seeing even more of this film in action.
The new trailer focuses a little less on vibes (although they do continue to be truly immaculate) and more on introducing the time-looping premise of the story. Unlike both Sakurazaka’s book and the 2014 live-action film, the new All You Need Is Kill does not center its perspective on Keiji (voiced here by Dan Da Dan and Demon Slayer‘s Natsuki Hanae, romanized as Cage in the 2014 film), but instead on Rita Vrataski (Ai Mikami), a young soldier on the front lines of humanity’s war against monstrous alien invaders.
When Rita and Keiji both discover they are linked by a shared time-loop awareness—beginning the same day over and over whenever Rita dies—they try to discover the cause of their dilemma, honing their skills in battle through endless loops along the way.
For those who’ve read the novel, you’ll know that Edge of Tomorrow made some tweaks to the original climax—and it seems like, even with a perspective change switching from Keiji to Rita, the new anime will be hewing much closer to the book. But regardless of where this version of All You Need Is Kill goes, we’re going to be in for a stunning-looking time whenever it makes its way outside of Japan.
All You Need Is Kill hits Japanese theaters on January 9, 2026.
